At the age of 22 Weelkes was appointed organist at Winchester College where he remained for two or three years. He obtained his B. Mus. Degree from New College Oxford in 1602 and moved to Chichcester to take up the position of organist and informator choristarum (instructor of the choristers) at the Cathedral a post he held until his death. Thomas Weelkes is best known for his vocal music especially his madrigals and church music. He wrote more Anglican services than any other major composer of the time mostly for evensong. Many of his anthems are verse anthems which would have suited the small forces he was writing for at Chichester Cathedral.

Three Renaissance Pieces
for Treble Voices Vol. 1:
SSA: Shawnee Press
A wonderful set of three tremendous songs by composers from the Renaissance era....(+)
A wonderful set of three tremendous songs by composers from the Renaissance era. All in delightful settings for SSA Upper Voice choir edited by Jerry Weseley Harris. Two cheerful and energetic pieces by Thomas Morley and one affected yet glorious piece by Thomas Weelkes. Besides their obvious musical talents these two contemporaries shared not only a Christian name and occupation but also an acquaintance with William Shakespeare and the patronage of Queen Elizabeth I. It is unsurprising that the music of these two contemporaries of the Renaissance period have survived and it is only fitting that works by these two friends should appear in this one edition.

| Nico Muhly: St JohnÂs
Service: SATB: Vocal
Score Choral SATB SATB, Organ [Vocal Score] St Rose Music Publishing
Johannis Cantabrigiense-Nico Muhly's Third Service (Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis)...(+)
Johannis Cantabrigiense-Nico Muhly's Third Service (Magnificat & Nunc Dimittis) is a work for SATB Choir and Organ Accompaniment. Commissioned by the Master and Fellows of St John's College Cambridge it was first performed by St John's College Choir on 29th May 2016. A full performance lasts around 7.5 minutes. 'The American composer Nico Muhly has often spoken of his love of the early English church music which he sang as a choirboy and his recent choral works include a Third Service composed for St John's College Cambridge. (Given his love of music by Thomas Weelkes we can perhaps hope for at least six more.) This setting though has nothing to do with the early English repertoire and is in a bold modern idiom more akin to Tippett's famous setting for St. John's. The Organ plays a varied and independent role throughout sometimes with dynamics that are quite different to those in the voice parts. The Organ part is sometimes written on two staves without further comment and it's not entirely clear what is required between pages 3 and 4 where three staves become two. The vocal parts include some modest vocal effects and there are Soprano and Alto solos in the Nunc dmittis. The Gloria of the Nunc is a varied repeat of the Magnificat Gloria together with a subtly reworked conclusion to match the general mood of the movement. - Geoffrey Webber Choir & Organ MagazineÂ

Madrigals are vocal compositions and can be traced back to 13th Century Italy. During the latter part of the 16th Century Nicholas Yonge of St. Paul's Cathedral in London published a collection of Italian Madrigals and translated the words into English. Thomas Morley organist of St. Pauls and around the same time as nicholas Yonge wrote many of the finest madrigals of this the greatest madrigal period. It was a very rich period of English musical compoosition made so by such illustrious names as Byrd Gibbons Tallis and Weelkes. Madrigal societies are still active and date from 1741 when the first was formed in the City of London. America also has participated in therevival of singing madrigals and has activated madrigal singing in universities and high schools.
